When applying for a job, attending court proceedings or presenting documents to authorities, you often need a certified translation carried out by a sworn, publicly appointed translator. By placing their attestation clause, official seal and signature below their own translation, the translator confirms that the translation corresponds in content to the original document.
As a general rule, it can be said that translations of documents such as certificates (e.g. birth or marriage certificates), signed contracts, leaving certificates, identification papers, driving licences, official notifications, verdicts and excerpts from the commercial register must always be certified.
If you wish to use a German certificate outside of Germany, you will require confirmation of the document’s authenticity. The authenticity of a certificate issued in Germany is confirmed either by “legalisation” or – in certain cases – by means of an “apostille”. Legalisation and apostilles are simply two different forms of legal authentication for documents. Whether legalisation or an apostille is required depends on which country you want to use the document in.
